Rommel was not a Nazi at all, ideologically speaking. The term “Good Nazi” would be best applied, as it often is, to German Minister of Armaments, Dr. Albert Speer. Rommel was first and foremost a soldier and a very good one at that, along with many other fine generals of the Wehrmacht. Though it would be hard to argue that he did not have blood on his hands due to command responsibility, that does not necessarily make him a Nazi, as many generals throughout WW2 had blood on their hands that was not made out of some ideology. Rommel detested the many brutalities carried out throughout the German armed forces, most notably desiring that the 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich” be severely punished for massacring civilians (women and children included) at Oradour-sur-Glane, in southern France. He was a decent man and a refreshing one, that out of all the heinous crimes carried out during the era on the Reich’s behalf, he managed to seep to the lows that many of his fellow German officers did.
