It's funny you say this, because I don't see it as depressing either, at least not overly. I suppose one reason why is that it is a Holocaust film, and when it comes to Holocaust films, I am not shocked, nor frightened, nor depressed because I can predict very well what is going to happen. But then again, tone is everything. Schindler's List focuses on a man who, for the most part, is well-off, and he remains physically and mentally well throughout the movie. Unlike that movie, Roman Polanski's The Pianist is depressing, as we have a main character, Władysław Szpilman, have everything taken away from him, and who slowly seems to be rotting throughout the film, mentally and physically. It's a film mostly about deterioration and I don't think Schindler's List has that (or at least not that much) due to Schindler's character.
