I watched the Ken Burns documentary on Hemingway, which was really good. There were many unsavory factors of this man as there were noble. What disgusted me the most though was when he was reporting on the Spanish Civil War and let an associate of a friend be executed by the communists fighting against the fascists in Spain. He was told by the victim's friend (whom, again, he was close to) to write a story on it, making it noticed (as this execution was a part of the tyranny of Joseph Stalin who was backing the communists at the time) to the public. But Hemingway refused, saying that it would ruin him.

Had he written the story, he might have saved the man. That or at least made the public aware of the devious activities the communists were committing.

I believe I got that right but the in-depth portion of this story is a little bit murky.
