I have been to the Mauthausen concentration camp in northern Austria. My reaction to the place was not what I expected. There was a solemn feeling but it was not as prominent as an emotionless sense of bewilderment, as if I did not know what to think of the place. Despite all the evidence, all the photos, all the documentation, all the victims, the thought would still go through my head: "All of those horrible, horrible things actually happened...?"

Even when you are there, it is still very hard to comprehend it; it is hard enough to comprehend it just by imagining it; to comprehend the emotionality of it....that is impossible until one actually experiences such cruelty, God forbid.
