Bewildering is indeed the word for it, among a few other demoralizing words. The hypocrisy is staggering, and we've seen a lot of that, I think, over the past decade or so (but I'm especially thinking of the year 2020 and onward). But now it's taken to a whole new level that my hope of it becoming of any benefit to society would be that it'd make great material for a satirical novel/movie.
